Shark Attack in Perth

Shark bites teen's leg off in Australia

Sat Dec 2, 7:01 PM ET

PERTH, Australia - A shark ripped off part of a 15-year-old tourist's leg on Saturday as he swam at a beach in Australia's remote southwest, officials said.

Zak Golebiowski, from South Australia state, was attacked as he bodysurfed with a brother and a friend about 40 yards offshore at Wharton Beach, said police Constable Katrina Luke.

The teen's right leg was severed above the knee and his left leg badly mauled, but family members and witnesses on the beach managed to stem the bleeding until an ambulance arrived, Luke said.(link)

According to the report, roughly 15 attacks happen each year in Australian waters (highest in the world). Fifteen sounds like a low number to me, but I guess if you are one of the 15, then it's at least one too many.

I thought I'd post this for my Perthian reader in case he/she hadn't heard the news yet.

*Update: Doh! Sorry, seems this happened on the 2nd of December (didn't look at the date) sorry about the late post :(
